To increase your credit score quickly, the honest list is short: register to vote at your current address, check each agency’s report and dispute errors, pay card balances down, and, for your Experian score only, try Experian Boost. Missed payments and defaults cannot be hurried; accurate ones usually stay six years.
This is an evergreen guide. This desk read Experian’s improvement guide, MoneyHelper’s guide and Equifax’s improvement page on 19 October 2026. Experian itself says there are “not many fast ways” to boost a score, because most improvements depend on the report changing over time.
How to increase credit score quickly: the speed table
The timings below are the sources’ own words. Where a source gives none, the cell says so rather than guessing.
| Fix | Timing the source states | Which score it touches | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Register to vote at your current address | Could improve your score within eight weeks; councils send voter data monthly | Not stated | MoneyHelper |
| Experian Boost | Experian Credit Score could increase instantly; not everyone’s will | Experian only; not all lenders use Boost | Experian |
| Pay a card below 30% utilisation | Not stated | Not stated | Experian |
| Dispute an error | Shouldn’t take longer than 28 days; marked disputed meanwhile | The agency you dispute with | MoneyHelper |
| Open a new account | Several weeks to appear; a few months to mature | Not stated | Experian |
| Missed payment, default or court judgment | Can stay six years; accurate entries can’t be removed sooner | Not stated | Experian, MoneyHelper |
The Equifax page read names the electoral register and current debt among things that could impact a score, but gives no timescale for any step.
Which fixes can move in weeks?
Besides Boost, two have a stated clock in weeks. Registering helps lenders confirm your name and address, in Experian’s words, and MoneyHelper notes that even a typo in your address can affect an application. A dispute is the other: while the agency investigates, MoneyHelper says lenders shouldn’t rely on the disputed entry. That is guidance, not a guarantee every lender follows.
Does Experian Boost work?
Boost connects your current account to your Experian account and looks for payments such as Council Tax, digital subscriptions and money paid into savings or investments. Experian says using it will not make your score go down. It also says not everyone’s score rises and not all lenders use Boost, so it changes one agency’s number for some lenders, not your file everywhere.
What paying a card down does
Utilisation is how much of your available credit you use. Experian’s example: £1,000 used on a £2,000 limit is 50%, and it suggests staying below 30%. Its guide does not say how soon a lower balance shows.
What cannot be hurried
Accurate negatives stay. MoneyHelper says missed payments usually remain for six years; if the reason no longer applies, you can add a Notice of Correction with each agency. Our piece on missing a personal loan payment covers how arrears reach a file.
Questions readers ask
How can I improve my credit score quickly?
Start with the steps that have a stated timescale. MoneyHelper says registering to vote at your current address could improve your score within eight weeks, and a dispute over an error shouldn’t take longer than 28 days. Experian Boost can lift your Experian score instantly, though not everyone’s rises and not all lenders use it.
How long does it take to improve your credit score?
Experian’s answer is that it depends on what is affecting your score. A new bank account or credit card can take several weeks to appear on a report and a few months to mature. Missed payments, defaults and court judgments can stay for six years, with their impact getting less over that time.
Does registering to vote improve your credit score?
It can. Experian says electoral roll information helps lenders confirm your name and address, and Equifax says it can give lenders proof of both. MoneyHelper adds that councils send voter data each month, so registering at your current address could improve your score within eight weeks. None of the three promises a set rise.
If your score has fallen rather than stalled, our three-agency list starts there; our CreditLadder assessment reads one rent-reporting contract. Loan Herald is a publisher, not a lender or broker, and is not authorised by the FCA; nothing here is advice, and no step above is promised to raise a score.
